How to clean and maintain rooftop solar panels
A simple routine that keeps generation high, plus mistakes to avoid.
Solar panels have no moving parts, but dust, bird droppings and loose connections quietly reduce generation. In Gujarat's dry months, dust is the biggest culprit.
How often to clean
Every two to four weeks for most homes; more often near construction, highways or industrial areas. Watch your monitoring app: a steady drop in generation on clear days usually means it is time.
How to clean safely
- Clean early in the morning or in the evening, when panels are cool.
- Use plain water and a soft brush or sponge. Avoid detergents, abrasive pads and high-pressure jets.
- Never walk on panels. Use the walkway or clean from the roof edge with a long-handled brush.
- If your water is hard, finish with soft water to avoid white marks.
Checks once or twice a year
- Cables, connectors and junction boxes for damage or heating marks.
- Inverter display and error log.
- Earthing and lightning arrester condition.
- Structure bolts and corrosion.
Electrical checks should be done by a trained technician. Our O&M and AMC plans cover cleaning, inspections and repairs, including for systems installed by other companies.
